If you are a new employee, ask for a Ramp Plan.

It should describe expectations for the first three months (by week) in detail. Who you should meet (and why), what you should accomplish, tools etc. And it should be reviewed every single week.

That is the humane thing to do for both the employee and manager. If the manager balks… why are you working there?
