Try living in rural America, where police are a long ways away. When I lived in rural Iowa, the vast majority of my neighbors had guns. I did not. But I am very glad they did. A great deterrent for would be criminals thinking a farm house would be an easy target.

And years ago, I had a friend whose wife was attacked by a “wanna be” motorcycle gang at their farmhouse while he was away.

“Who in the world needs a 20 shot magazine?” A clueless urban politician has asked many times. She did that day. A semi automatic scared them all away without anyone being killed or raped.
